Avis US rental rules

Avis: debit card, deposit, age and IDP rules

Avis accepts debit cards at participating US locations, subject to age, vehicle, identity and credit-qualification conditions. Its published deposit is an authorization basis, not a promise that every reservation needs the same amount.

Avis's published US qualification route

National guidance reviewed 2026-09-30; exact airport evidence keeps its individual source dates.

Age
The US debit FAQ generally requires age 25, with an age-18 New York exception. Credit-card rental age and class limits must be checked separately.
Debit card
The national FAQ identifies Visa and Mastercard debit at participating locations, possible credit checks, airport identification and vehicle restrictions. Do not apply debit eligibility to every Avis rate or location.
Foreign licence and IDP
Physical valid licence through the rental; international visitors may need an IDP and a same-name passport. Avis's FAQ and agreement differ on temporary licences, so that document remains an unresolved conflict.

Some Avis branches state estimated rental charges plus $200; longer or special rentals can require more. Paying the booking price online does not replace qualification at pickup. The bank controls when released funds become available.

Avis national authorization guidance and its limits

Avis publishes a $250 hold when the rental was prepaid by debit; exceptions may apply.

Avis publishes estimated charges plus $300 for debit rentals of four days or more in many cases; exceptions may apply.

Avis publishes estimated charges plus $200 for shorter rentals in many cases; exceptions may apply.

Credit-card pickup

  • The qualifying card must cover estimated charges and the matched authorization.
  • Premium and specialty vehicle groups may add restrictions.
  • Avis's reviewed U.S. terms require an IDP with a non-Roman-alphabet licence. Renters residing outside the U.S./Canada need the foreign licence, passport and return airline ticket to qualify for the quoted rate.
  • With a non-U.S. licence, present the licence plus a passport or a Canadian enhanced licence. With a Mexico-issued licence, a valid travel visa may replace the passport as secondary ID. NEXUS does not replace these documents. This branch identity rule is separate from the previously reviewed country IDP/translation rule.

Debit with return itinerary

  • Debit pickup is limited to Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard, Full-Size and Standard SUV groups; the broad SUV choice does not confirm the booked group.
  • The exact branch requires an accepted debit-card processing logo, the renter's name and a return airline ticket coinciding with the rental. A credit-worthiness check applies; an Equifax freeze must be lifted, and this does not guarantee approval.
  • Published hold amounts are discretionary guidance; the selected reservation and counter authorization control.

Debit without return itinerary

  • The published airport debit route requires a return airline ticket coinciding with the rental.

Prepaid card

  • Prepaid debit and gift cards cannot serve as credit identification at pickup; an eligible card may be accepted for payment after return.

Avis credit vs debit authorization examples

Credit card

$200 additional in many rentals

General national guidance · US guidance published on the MCO branch page

Avis describes many credit rentals as estimated charges plus $200; others may hold only estimated charges or use exceptions. The explicit prepaid-debit $250 rule must not be assumed to apply to every prepaid credit rental. Confirm the authorization for the selected offer.

Additional to the rental charges that remain due, subject to the stated scenario.

Debit card

$200 additional; $300 for 4+ days; prepaid debit hold $250

General national guidance · US guidance published on the MCO branch page

These are Avis's amounts for many debit rentals; exceptions may apply. A prepaid-debit $250 hold is additional to the amount already paid. Debit acceptance, airport itinerary and eligible vehicle requirements remain separate checks.

Additional to the rental charges that remain due, subject to the stated scenario.

Avis national evidence and exceptions

These country-scoped conditions are maintained here once. They do not establish an unreviewed branch's acceptance; the airport profiles retain local and selected-offer restrictions.

license/ID

Avis's current official U.S. terms require a valid licence from the country of residence and an IDP for a non-Roman alphabet. Renters residing outside the U.S./Canada need their foreign licence, passport and return airline ticket to qualify for the quoted rate. This national document evidence does not verify other exact branch fields.

deposit/hold

The U.S. guidance on Avis's MCO page describes credit authorizations as estimated charges, or charges plus $200 for many rentals. Its separate debit paragraph permits charges plus $300 for rentals of four days or more; prepaid-debit guidance is $250. Exceptions and exact reservation terms control. The debit duration amount does not establish a four-day credit authorization or acceptance at another branch.

Which terms should you confirm with the branch?

Give the operating location the rental dates, age at pickup, licence issuing country and language, current residence, card type, vehicle and return itinerary. Ask it to identify any missing or conflicting rule and the total pickup authorization for that exact setup.

Keep national guidance, branch evidence and a selected-rate capture distinct. A return itinerary can satisfy one payment condition without approving a restricted vehicle; a prepaid rate can pay the price without approving the card required for the hold.

If another person will drive, verify their age and original licence, permitted relation and additional-driver charge. Cardholder-name checks still apply to the main renter. An extra driver or relative's booking payment does not automatically permit a different pickup card.
