Practical rental guide
International driving permits for U.S. car rentals: licence, translation and ID checks
Know when an IDP is a translation aid, why the original licence still matters and which branch facts need confirmation.
What this guide helps you decide
Prepare the original licence, translation and identity documents an international visitor may need at pickup.
An IDP does not replace your driving licence
An International Driving Permit translates information from a valid licence. It is not a standalone licence, so the original valid driving licence must travel with it. U.S. state and rental-supplier requirements can both matter.
Alphabet and language change the document check
A licence printed in English, another language using Latin letters, or a non-Latin alphabet may be treated differently. Supplier pages may require or recommend an IDP or professional translation and can also ask a non-U.S. renter for a passport or another government-issued identity document.
Check the rule before arriving in the United States
The U.S. government warns that IDPs cannot be issued to foreign visitors after arrival in the United States. Confirm the destination-state and branch requirements early enough to obtain any required permit from the authorized organization in the licence-issuing country.
Pickup checklist
- 1Bring the original, unexpired driving licence.
- 2Identify the licence alphabet and whether an official translation is needed.
- 3Obtain any required IDP before travel from an authorized issuer.
- 4Bring the passport or identity document required by the supplier.
- 5Check licence-held-duration rules for the exact branch.
Questions renters ask
Can I show only an IDP?
No. An IDP is a translation document, not a replacement for the original valid licence.
Can a U.S. rental counter issue an IDP?
No. If one is required, arrange it before travel through an authorized organization in the country that issued your licence.
