Hertz US rental rules

Hertz: debit card, deposit, age and IDP rules

Hertz's US national policy offers debit pickup with conditions and geographic exceptions. Exact branch terms matter: JFK publishes a debit route that is more specific than the broad national page.

Hertz's published US qualification route

National guidance reviewed 2026-09-30; exact airport evidence keeps its individual source dates.

Age
Usually 20; 18 in New York/Michigan and 19 in Alabama/Nebraska. Hertz requires a licence in good standing for over a year. Age does not settle debit eligibility.
Debit card
National airport guidance requires a return airline flight and two IDs, limits standard debit classes and usually involves a credit check. Geographic, loyalty-profile and replacement exceptions exist. The age-25/24-hour wording belongs to the off-airport route, not a blanket airport age rule.
Foreign licence and IDP
Valid original licence. The reviewed MCO branch requests a same-name passport for foreign licences and recommends an IDP for non-English documents. Broader official IDP wording differs, so confirm the exact branch for an international trip.

Hertz JFK publishes standard credit authorization of estimated charges plus up to $200 and a $500 debit add-on, with higher amounts for specified vehicle groups. The broad US payment page instead says up to $500 plus estimated charges. Do not label the JFK credit figure a universal Hertz amount.

Hertz US payment instruments and prepaid bookings

Network guidance does not approve a local debit rental. Match the airport's acceptance, age, vehicle, itinerary and physical-card requirements separately.

Credit networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover. Debit networks: Visa, Mastercard, Discover. Rejected at pickup: prepaid/stored-value cards, mobile-wallet-only cards.

  • The pickup card and branch qualifications still apply to a prepaid booking.

Hertz national authorization guidance and its limits

Hertz's national U.S. payment page describes estimated rental charges plus up to $500. This upper bound does not establish an exact branch deposit or a universal $200 credit hold.

Credit-card pickup

  • Present a qualifying physical credit card in the main renter's name.
  • Hertz's U.S. age guidance requires a licence in good standing for over one year.
  • The reviewed branch requires the foreign licence and a same-name passport. It recommends an IDP for a non-English licence; the IDP never replaces the original licence.

Debit with return itinerary

  • Bring a return travel ticket aligned with the rental and two forms of identification.
  • Debit qualification can include a credit check and vehicle restrictions; loyalty-profile and insurance-replacement exceptions require confirmation.
  • The airport return ticket must be an airline ticket; Pay Now bookings require a major credit card.

Debit without return itinerary

  • Standard airport debit qualification requires a return travel ticket; confirm any loyalty or insurance-replacement exception directly.

Prepaid card

  • A prepaid or stored-value card can be used for final payment where accepted; it does not qualify as the pickup deposit card.

Hertz credit vs debit authorization examples

Credit card

Up to $200 extra standard; named vehicle-group extras $300–$900

Published branch limit · MIA payment terms: conditional authorization and vehicle groups

The MIA endpoint gives an up-to-$200 standard authorization beyond estimated charges, with named SUV and specialty groups at $300/$400/$500/$750/$850/$900. This is not an exact standard charge or a dependable mapping from a generic luxury/SUV label. Reservation-specific terms may change the hold.

Additional to the rental charges that remain due, subject to the stated scenario.

Debit card

$500 extra in the MIA policy; conditional up-to-$500 language also applies

Published branch limit · MIA: eligible cars and compact/small SUVs with return airline ticket

The debit section lists $500 beyond estimated charges and also describes a conditional authorization of up to $500. A return airline ticket matching the rental and two valid IDs are required, with eligible vehicle limits and possible credit screening. Pay Now requires a qualifying credit card.

Additional to the rental charges that remain due, subject to the stated scenario.

Which terms should you confirm with the branch?

Give the operating location the rental dates, age at pickup, licence issuing country and language, current residence, card type, vehicle and return itinerary. Ask it to identify any missing or conflicting rule and the total pickup authorization for that exact setup.

Keep national guidance, branch evidence and a selected-rate capture distinct. A return itinerary can satisfy one payment condition without approving a restricted vehicle; a prepaid rate can pay the price without approving the card required for the hold.

If another person will drive, verify their age and original licence, permitted relation and additional-driver charge. Cardholder-name checks still apply to the main renter. An extra driver or relative's booking payment does not automatically permit a different pickup card.
