Practical rental guide
Hertz Debit Card Rental Rules: US Airports, Holds and Exceptions
Check Hertz's national airport debit rules, geographic exceptions and exact JFK credit/debit authorization examples before booking.
What this guide helps you decide
Identify whether national or exact-branch Hertz evidence supports your airport debit route and calculate the appropriate hold basis.
Conditional, with important branch exceptions
Hertz's US national policy offers debit pickup with conditions and geographic exceptions. Exact branch terms matter: JFK publishes a debit route that is more specific than the broad national page.
National airport guidance requires a return airline flight and two IDs, limits standard debit classes and usually involves a credit check. Geographic, loyalty-profile and replacement exceptions exist. The age-25/24-hour wording belongs to the off-airport route, not a blanket airport age rule.

Airport, off-airport and JFK are different scopes
The age-25 and 24-hour advance-reservation text on Hertz's broad page belongs to its local off-airport debit route. Do not apply it to every airport renter. The same national source names geographic areas where initial debit use is restricted and describes loyalty-profile and insurance-replacement exceptions.
| Scope | Debit qualification | Authorization example |
|---|---|---|
| National US airport guidance | Return airline flight, two IDs, standard vehicle restriction; geographic exceptions and credit screening | Estimated charges plus up to $500; conditions set at rental |
| JFKT02 exact PAYMENT terms | Published branch route, return flight/two IDs and specified vehicles; Pay Now credit requirement | Standard credit up to +$200; debit +$500; named classes higher |
| Corporate local off-airport route | Advance reservation, age 25 and CDP or return-trip proof; two IDs | Confirm exact local terms |
A national geographic restriction and a more specific branch route must stay visible. Use the exact applicable terms rather than claiming all Hertz airports accept debit.
At age 20, start with age and then evaluate payment
Usually 20; 18 in New York/Michigan and 19 in Alabama/Nebraska. Hertz requires a licence in good standing for over a year. Age does not settle debit eligibility.
A renter old enough for Hertz is not automatically qualified for the selected debit route. Review age, licence-held period, card type, flight evidence and vehicle together. A Hertz AAA young-renter fee waiver is a fee programme, not a debit-qualification waiver.
Foreign licences and documents
Valid original licence. The reviewed MCO branch requests a same-name passport for foreign licences and recommends an IDP for non-English documents. Broader official IDP wording differs, so confirm the exact branch for an international trip.
Give the branch the actual licence language/script and current residence. Request the applicable IDP instruction in writing if broader Hertz pages and the branch do not agree. Carry the original physical documents even if an app lets you upload images in advance.
Pay Now and return payment are separate
A debit card permitted to pay the final balance is not necessarily permitted to qualify for pickup. Hertz's reviewed JFK payment terms require credit for Pay Now. Debit, prepaid and store-value cards can have distinct end-of-rental treatment.
Confirm the full authorization for your selected car class and rate. JFK's standard +$200 credit amount does not replace its larger SUV/specialty amounts or the national up-to-$500 guidance elsewhere.
Worked JFK authorization: a standard car is not every vehicle tier
Assume, solely for illustration, that a qualifying JFK reservation has $250 in estimated charges still due. The reviewed JFKT02 payment terms publish a standard credit add-on of up to $200: the corresponding planning example is up to $450. The published qualifying debit add-on is $500, giving $750 on the same assumed rental balance. These examples are authorization calculations, not rental prices or an approval of the renter's debit route.
JFK's named credit tiers differ: its Small SUV add-on is $300 and Standard SUV add-on is $400, making $550 or $650 with that same hypothetical $250 estimate. Other listed vehicle groups can require more. Match the supplier's exact vehicle group to the reservation rather than selecting a broad SUV label and assuming the standard-car amount. These are JFK branch figures, not national Hertz amounts.
Ask these counter questions before paying for a debit rate
Confirm that the reservation is at the branch whose payment terms you reviewed. Ask whether its debit route applies to the exact car group, how the return airline evidence must match the trip, which second ID is accepted, and whether a credit check remains part of qualification. A debit card already stored in a qualifying loyalty profile is a different exception from merely joining the programme immediately before travel.
If a national page names a geographic restriction while the branch publishes a more specific acceptance route, show both sources and ask which terms govern the selected reservation. A clerk's generic statement that Hertz accepts debit at return does not answer whether it will release this vehicle against debit at pickup. Keep any written clarification with the booking, and retain a qualifying alternative payment method when your route has not been resolved.
Pickup checklist
- 1Select the exact Hertz branch and payment route.
- 2Check geographic and loyalty-profile exceptions.
- 3Bring return flight evidence and required IDs for the airport debit route.
- 4Verify licence-held duration and allowed vehicle group.
- 5Ask for the selected-rate total authorization before prepaying.
Questions renters ask
Does Hertz accept debit at all US airports?
Do not make that blanket assumption. The national page has geographic restrictions and exceptions, while some branches publish more specific routes. Confirm the branch and booking terms.
Is the Hertz credit-card hold always $200?
No. JFK's standard credit figure is an exact branch example. Its named vehicle groups can require more, and national guidance says up to $500 plus estimated charges.
Must every Hertz airport debit renter be 25?
The age-25 language in the reviewed broad payment page belongs to the off-airport route. Evaluate the exact airport's age, debit and vehicle requirements together.
