Practical rental guide
Can You Rent a Car at 20 in the US? Supplier and State Exceptions
Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty publish age-20 routes at many US locations. Compare payment restrictions, young-renter fees and New York/Michigan exceptions.
What this guide helps you decide
Find age-20 possibilities without mistaking a minimum-age rule for approval of your debit card or chosen vehicle.
Yes at some suppliers, subject to the rest of the rules
Conditional: Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty publish a usual minimum age of 20 at many US locations. Other researched brands commonly start at 21 outside their exceptions. A valid licence, payment qualification, class restriction and young-renter charge still apply.
Use your age at pickup, not at booking. Choose the exact airport, then compare the credit and debit routes separately. New York or Michigan age exceptions cannot be carried into a rental collected in another state.

Age-20 supplier comparison
These are published age routes, not price quotes. Where an exact airport is named, the evidence remains at that airport.
| Supplier / scope | Age-20 route | Remaining condition |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz US | Usually meets the age minimum | Over-one-year licence requirement; young-renter fee and vehicle/payment restrictions |
| Dollar US | Usually meets the age minimum | Local young-renter fee, physical card and debit qualification |
| Thrifty US | Usually meets the age minimum | Local young-renter fee, physical card and document rules |
| Enterprise / Alamo / National MCO | Below published age 21 | Use another documented supplier/branch route |
| National JFK | Meets branch minimum age 18 | Published ages18–20 fee $68.75/day, plus other requirements |
| Avis / Budget / SIXT | Do not assume ordinary age20 eligibility | Check the state, branch and approved programme exception |
New York and Michigan exceptions
Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty publish age 18 for New York and Michigan. The reviewed National JFK page also starts at 18 and has different surcharge bands for ages 18–20 and 21–24. Hertz additionally publishes age 19 in Alabama and Nebraska.
These supplier statements do not settle every company's local qualification, fee or vehicle rule. A low minimum age does not remove debit restrictions, and the fee for an 18–20-year-old can differ materially from an age21–24 fee.
Why a cheap rate can still be the expensive option
Compare the full booking price for your actual age: base rate, young-renter charge, taxes, airport fees and required extras. Keep the refundable deposit separate from cost, while ensuring your card can support it.
A four-day rental with a published $25/day age charge adds $100 before tax. A $68.75/day charge adds $275 over four days. These arithmetic examples use different scoped fees and do not claim the same car, airport or total price.
Use a documented fee waiver only when you qualify
Hertz publishes a young-renter fee waiver for AAA members ages20–24 at participating locations. Inspect the membership, booking-code and location terms and compare the total quote with an ordinary rate before buying membership just for one rental.
Do not enter an employer, insurance or membership code you are not entitled to use. A fee waiver does not waive the supplier's age, licence, debit or vehicle checks.
Two age-20 trip examples with different outcomes
Example one: a 20-year-old seeks an ordinary Enterprise MCO rental. The reviewed branch minimum is 21, so a credit card, return flight or large bank balance cannot cure that age failure. Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty publish national age-20 possibilities, but those alternatives still need the exact branch's payment and vehicle checks. Hertz's licence must also have been in good standing for over a year; merely meeting the age minimum does not remove that condition.
Example two: a 20-year-old uses a supported National JFK route for three charged days. Its published ages18–20 fee is $68.75 per day, so the age surcharge is $206.25 before tax. Add that to an illustrative $250 base/time charge and the limited subtotal is $456.25 before other fees, taxes or optional products. The base figure is hypothetical. The deposit must be calculated separately for the actual card and itinerary; the age-fee calculation does not approve debit.
Check the exact vehicle and any later birthday
Give the supplier the age on the scheduled pickup date and the precise vehicle group. Ask whether the quoted age charge covers every charged day and how an extension would change it. Do not assume an upgrade into a restricted group remains eligible because the booking accepted an economy car. If another person will drive, evaluate that driver's age and licence separately before adding them to the agreement.

Questions renters ask
Can a 20-year-old rent at Orlando MCO?
Some national supplier age routes support age20, such as Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty. The reviewed Enterprise, Alamo and National MCO branches require21. Exact branch payment and vehicle terms remain necessary.
Does being 20 mean I can use a debit card?
No. Minimum rental age and debit qualification are separate rules. Compare the exact airport's card, itinerary, identity and vehicle requirements.
Is New York's age18 rule valid in Florida?
No. Check the pickup state's supplier policy; a New York branch exception does not establish age eligibility for a Florida pickup.
